Just watching Ken Loach's 1969 masterpiece, Kes.
Not seen it for years but still as fresh and convincing today as it was 53 years ago.
The Manchester United v Spurs cup match scene, featuring PE teacher, Brian Glover as the fair-haired slightly balding Bobby Charlton played out in front of the bleak South Yorkshire coalfields is a tour de force.
Very rare to see these sorts of films made today although Kenneth Branagh's Belfast was a great resent attempt..

Read a write on the film ages ages a go and the canning bit in the school where al the boys lined up was for real and on watching it looked that way.
or have I got my films confused.
I just checked, they did indeed cane them for real, in fact they never even told them until it happened. They did get paid extra for it though. I felt for the little kid that they all piled their fags onto, poor bloke was near to tears.

^ this was shite. Surprised to see it mentioned in the same thread as Kes. A very sanitsed Northern Ireland troubles and, of course, the protaganists were all above the petty hatred and prejudices that fuelled it all. Like fuck! They all would have had very tribal opinions, no one was above it all.

Without meaning to sound too dramatic but I genuinely think the football scene is some of the best film making ever. I suppose it's all about opinion. But if you've been a kid into football (as I was) and been out playing footy for PE in the freezing cold with kids that hate football it's about as genuine and real life as it gets. Brian Glover is simply magnificent playing that part. It's a scene that is as funny as it is tragic.

Another masterpiece that never gets an airing these days is the Dennis Potter play Blue remembered hills where all the children are played by adults.
Its funny tragic and a little worrying
A great cast also.

Watched "The Sting" last night featuring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. Hadn't seen it for about 30 years. Absolute classic and would recommend.

Get Carter (1971), one of Michael Caine’s great films has some superb scenes of the North-East back in the day around Durham, Newcastle and Gateshead.

This was discussed on the fim thread a few months back, I watched it again earlier this year, it's pretty bleak with a sad ending but realistic to how it was back then in the North. Ken Loach still lives in Barnsley to this day.
Didn't think too much of Belfast, that's not to say it's not a good film, just not really my thing.
